Rep. Laurel Lee and Veterans’ Advocates Join ¿ìèÊÓƵ for Event Highlighting Housing Initiatives for Veterans

WASHINGTON—The ¿ìèÊÓƵ (¿ìèÊÓƵ) is holding its annual Veterans Day event on Monday, November 13 from 2-3:30 p.m. ET. This year’s virtual event will build on the findings of ¿ìèÊÓƵ’s Veterans Task Force by highlighting the needs of veterans who are unhoused or at risk for homelessness.
¿ìèÊÓƵ’s 2022 Justice Gap report found that 1.6 million veterans have household incomes below 125% of the poverty threshold. And despite the high prevalence of civil legal needs – 76% of these households had at least one civil legal problem in the previous year – low-income veterans and other military personnel received inadequate or no legal help for 84% of their problems.
¿ìèÊÓƵ’s event will feature remarks from Rep. Laurel Lee (FL-15); Nichele Carver, senior regional advisor with the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness; ¿ìèÊÓƵ Board Chair John G. Levi and ¿ìèÊÓƵ Veterans Task Force Co-Chair Abigail Lawlis Kuzma. Danielle Brooks, ¿ìèÊÓƵ’s Chief Human Resources Officer and an Army veteran, will also share her reflections.
¿ìèÊÓƵ’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Will Gunn will moderate a panel examining strategies for better delivering legal services to veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Gunn is a former general counsel for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and a retired Air Force colonel. The panel will feature:

· Samuel Holmes, executive director, Homeless Resource Council of the Sierras (CA)
· Pye N. Young, managing attorney, Bay Area Legal Services (FL)
